Latest from Cricket Leinster, Nov 2022

Some quick cricket updates for you all.

Umpiring courses

Apparently there is an overwhelming feeling among experienced umpires that online training of umpires is not being very effective. Hence the move back to in-person training. With the in-person training, the number of slots are fixed. Please check out the dates, and book the dates based on what suits you.

Please read through the initiatives being offered by the club to take up umpiring at: https://sandyfordcricket.club/2022/09/24/sandyford-cricket-club-umpiring-initiatives/

As always, if you have any questions, please call the club secretary.

Scorer courses

Are limited to 10 people per course and are free. Please see the document below for details. Please register if you are interested. Each team needs to have a few people who are well versed in scoring.

Update on ground situation

Kevin Gallagher, Mick Cotter and Dale [Cricket Leinster Grounds Consultant] visiting visited the new proposed site for the cricket ground today. The following were the results:

  • They had a list of recommendations including changing the orientation of the mat, the location of the nets bay and the location of the club house and the size of the ground.
  • They inspected the ground and made recommendations about flattening out the ground, potential timelines, laying of the mat etc.
  • They physically measured the ground again to back their recommentations.

They will now issue a ground report with recommendations, backed by Cricket Leinster. They will send this report to DLR County Council.

Sandyford CC is very grateful to the support and help we continue to receive from Cricket Leinster on the matter.

Registrations for 2023 now open

Cricket Leinster registrations for 2023 are now open. See their post: REGISTRATION FOR THE 2023 SEASON – NOW OPEN!

There is a 10% discount to be had if you register before 01 Jan 2023.

Please note: if you register early, the club can assess the number of people in the club and therefore determine the number of teams we can put forward in 2023 more accurately.

Meeting the umpiring capacity challenge: Sandyford CC initiatives

During the winter of 2021-22, Cricket Leinster launched a new scheme: meeting capacity challenge in umpiring. This scheme aims to

  • Massively decrease the number of matches where players from the batting side act as umpires.
  • Recognise those clubs whose members are active umpires.
  • Incentivise clubs to ensure they provide umpires from their membership.

There is clear evidence that the lack of appointed umpires at matches has a material effect on the enjoyment of the game and on disciplinary matters. The scheme has a long lead in time. This ensures that the clubs have the chance to identify and recruit suitable umpires. To find more details of the scheme, please click here. Under the scheme, all qualified umpires can allocate the matches they stand in to a club.

Sandyford CC initiatives in 2022

The cricket club paid the course fees for 6 members from the club to qualify as umpires in 2022. Unfortunately most of the players who qualified as umpires in 2022 did not officiate a single match in 2022. Even if they do umpire a few games each in 2023, the current number of umpires in Sandyford CC will not be able to fulfil the 80 umpiring appointments we will need to provide in 2023. NOTE: the 80 umpiring appointments is assuming that we will have 4 teams in 2023.

Sandyford CC initiatives for 2023

If you are interested in qualifying as umpires, please register your interest. You can do so by sending an email to the club email ID [see the page footer for email link]. The club will provide you with incentives listed below.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

In an ideal world, one should need no additional incentive. The love for the game and accruing up to 50 penalty points in a season should be incentive enough. But, as a club, we do appreciate that we should do our bit to encourage people into umpiring. As a club, we would wish to be in a position to eventually abolish these incentives in the long run.

FAQs

What are we being asked to do?

If you would like to help the club out by umpiring next year, please send an email to the club email ID [see the page footer for email link] and register your interest.

Deadline?

10 October 2022

What happens once I register interest?

The club will send an email to the LCU&SA education secretary and ensure that you are assured a seat in the upcoming umpiring courses to be held in the winter.

What happens if I miss the deadline to register interest?

You can register your interest at a later date also – but, there is a possibility that you might not get a place in the upcoming umpiring course.

What is the expectation in 2023?

The club expects that anyone who is a qualified umpire in Sandyford CC umpires at least 6 games in 2023. Failing that, we will not meet our obligation to Cricket Leinster and will be docked penalty points. For details, read the capacity challenge document here

What will it cost an individual?

The club will reimburse the umpiring course fee on successfully completing the umpiring course. Every umpire will then have the following expenditure:
[1] approximately EUR 70.00 one time cost in the first year to purchase the white kit.
[2] EUR 50.00 in LCU&SA membership fees each year.

Do the umpires get paid for games that they officiate

LCU&SA pay expenses for each game that one umpires. As of 2022, the expenses paid are:
[1] EUR 50.00 for a 40+ over a side game.
[2] EUR 30.00 for a 20 over game.
[3] EUR 50.00 for 2x 20 over games on the same day.
This is applicable to all games where some play happens or where the umpires have to go to the ground to call the game off.

What initiatives is Sandyford CC offering?

[1] The club will reimburse the course fee on successfully completing the umpiring course.
[2] The club will provide a one-off EUR 50.00 rebate, contingent upon umpiring a minimum of 6 games in the season in the first year of umpiring.
[2] The club will offer the following additional rebates: EUR 5.00 for each T20 game that you officiate, EUR 10.00 for each 40+ over game that you officiate. This is not contingent upon any minimum number of games.
[3] The upper limit on the rebate is the subs due from the member.
[4] The club reserves the right to review the rebate scheme in the AGM each year.
[5] The club reserves the right to review the rebate scheme before the season commences in 2023. If the clubs finances are not in good shape the rebate scheme might be revised. If Cricket Leinster decides not to enforce the new scheme, the rebate scheme will be put on hold.

Can I see some examples of how the rebate scheme works?

Example 1: If a person umpires 8 games [4x T20, 4x 40+ overs] each season, we calculate the rebate as follows:
[year 1] EUR 50.00 one time + 4 x 5 + 4 x 10 = EUR 110.00
[year 2 onwards] 4 x 5 + 4 x 10 = EUR 60.00
Example 2: If a person umpires 4 games [2x T20, 2x 40+ overs] each season, we calculate the rebate as follows:
[year 1] EUR 00.00 one time + 2 x 5 + 2 x 10 = EUR 30.00
[year 2 onwards] 2 x 5 + 2 x 10 = EUR 30.00
Example 3: If a person umpires 30 games [10x T20, 20x 40+ overs] each season, we calculate the rebate as follows:
[year 1] EUR 50.00 one time + 10 x 5 + 20 x 10 = EUR 300.00; apply the subs cap and thus membership free.
[year 2 onwards] 10 x 5 + 20 x 10 = EUR 250.00; apply the subs cap and thus membership free.

When actually do I get the rebate?

We will calculate the rebate owed to the member and make an appropriate refund at the end of the season, no later than 31 Oct 2023.
